Nagarjun day hike offers a unique and enchanting experience where you can explore the diverse flora and fauna while enjoying breathtaking mountain views. Unlike other recommended hikes, this hike allows you to witness both aspects simultaneously. The hill derives its name from a cave called Nagarjun, where Guru Aacharya Narayan meditated.
Situated within the Shivapuri National Park, this hill is home to several endangered species. Due to its location within the national park, a special permit is required for entry. It is located approximately seven kilometers from the city center, resulting in a rich variety of plants and animals along the trail. Nagarjun hill is a haven for nature lovers, as you can observe a wide variety of birds and enjoy the melodious chirping of birds and insects throughout the hike.
Furthermore, this place holds historical significance, as it was once a military fort in ancient Kathmandu Valley before the unification of Nepal into a kingdom. Remnants of the fort, including old bricks, can still be found atop the hill, serving as a reminder of its glorious past. The fort was constructed approximately 200 years ago, adding to the historical importance of Nagarjun hill. Additionally, there is a summer residence of the kings in this area.
Culturally, the Nagarjun hill hike holds value, as the top of the hill is home to Jamachowk, a famous religious site where a grand festival is celebrated during the Nepali New Year. The trail also passes through villages where people still maintain a traditional countryside lifestyle. The locals are known for their friendliness and kind-heartedness, ensuring a comfortable experience during your expedition.
The trip reaches its pinnacle when you reach the top, where a majestic lineup of mountains awaits you, proudly standing in the lap of Mother Nature. Among the mountains visible from Nagarjun hill are Mt. Ganesh, Mt. Lirung, Mt. Langtang, Mt. Dorje Lakpa, and more. The intensity of the scenery leaves a lasting smile on people's faces, even long after the trip. It's an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in the captivating natural beauty.
The hike begins at Balaju Bypass, which connects to Trisuli, where international tourists are required to obtain permits to enter the conservation area. It takes approximately two hours to reach the hill's summit. From the view tower on the ridge, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayas.
Take your time to savor the magical vistas and capture the grandeur of nature through your camera lens. Exploring the Buddhist Gompa located at the hill's top is also part of the experience.
